How to calculate portfolio allocation and concentration
Portfolio allocation shows how the current value of your holdings is distributed. It is a snapshot of the positions you enter, not a recommendation for a target mix. This calculator groups current market values by holding and sector and shows the combined weight of your largest three and five holdings.
Formulas: current value and portfolio weight
Enter the total current market value of each position directly. If your broker shows only quantity and unit price, multiply those first to get the position value. Total portfolio value = sum of all entered position values. Holding weight (%) = holding value ÷ total portfolio value × 100. Sector weight (%) = sum of the current values in that sector ÷ total portfolio value × 100.
Top-3 concentration is the combined value of the three largest distinct holdings divided by total portfolio value, multiplied by 100. Top-5 concentration uses the five largest. If the portfolio has fewer than three or five distinct holdings, that measure includes every holding and is 100%.
Worked fictional example
The sample has ₹10,000 in total current value. Aurora Software is worth ₹3,000, or 30%. Orbit Devices adds ₹1,200 to the same Technology sector, making the sector’s weight 42%. The three largest holdings total ₹6,300, so top-3 concentration is 63%. The five largest total ₹9,000, giving top-5 concentration of 90%. All company names and prices are made up.
How are duplicate holdings and missing sectors handled?
Names are trimmed and compared without regard to case. Multiple rows for the same name are combined before ranking, so splitting one asset into several lots cannot understate concentration. Use the same sector for those lots. Blank sectors are shown as Unclassified. Supply distinct names for different assets that happen to have similar names.
Limitations and exporting
This tool supports non-negative current position values, including zero-value rows. It does not fetch quotes, infer sectors, look through fund holdings, assess correlation, or account for leverage, shorts, tax or currency conversion. All rows must use the same currency; the display and CSV label it INR. A zero-value portfolio has no defined allocation. Rounded percentages can sum to slightly more or less than 100%.
The accessible tables contain the same sector data as the bar chart. Download CSV creates a file locally with holding values, sector totals and concentration metrics. No upload is involved. The file contains what you entered, so handle it as private financial information; resetting this page does not delete files you already downloaded.
